Wheel loss

Loss of a wheel from a Toyota Hilux - occurred on the A83 in Lochgilphead, fortunately driving at approximately 10-15 mph at the time of the incident which helped prevent further damage or injury.

While the investigation continues, reminders to employees and contractors, of the critical safety steps to follow whenever a vehicle wheel is changed or removed and refitted:

  • Follow your organisation’s approved process for vehicle recovery, wheel replacement, and inspection.
  • If roadside replacement is necessary, ensure it is carried out by a competent and qualified fitter.
  • Ensure the wheel and mounting surfaces are clean, rust-free, and free from damage before fitting.
  • Check any wheel security indicators are fitted or replaced as required.
  • Where a temporary wheel is fitted, refit the original wheel as soon as practicable.
  • Always have the wheel nuts checked and re-torqued by a competent person after the first 25–50 miles of driving.
