Good practices for Use of MEWPs

SSE shared alert

Our contracting utility arborist were clearing the hedge row under the 11kv line during a shutdown. In the process of cutting from a MEWP (mobile elevated work platform), it slowly started to roll towards the hedge, coming to rest at a 45-degree angle. The operative remained in the bucket throughout. Luckily, there were no injuries, and a full investigation is underway. In a different set of circumstances, the arborist could have been thrown from the bucket which was approx. 7m high at the time.

Good practices for Use of MEWPs

  • Pre-use checks and operations should always be carried out before use
  • Suitable and in date harness and fall restraint lanyard must always be worn and attached to a recognised anchor point when operating MEWPs.
  • Ensure you are familiar with the emergency procedures, and document on the point of work risk assessment
  • Exclusion zones must always be set up around any moving plant
  • Set up on level ground
  • Spreader plates should always be used
