Quads & All-Terrain Vehicles

This guide covers the safe working practices to be followed when using sit-astride all-terrain vehicles (Quad Bikes) and side-by-side all-terrain vehicles (ATV). All-terrain vehicles are vehicles that are designed specifically for off-road use.

Updated July 2026 - carrying important information relating to the use of ATVs both in forestry and agriculture.

A summary of the updates is also available covering a prominent rollover warning banner, reformats and renumbers the entire guide as a continuous checklist, adds a new item on steep-slope restart protocol plus a throttle-care note for inexperienced riders, removes the detailed Honda-manual failed-hill-climb recovery procedure in favour of a general reference to trained protocol, updates two PPE standards references (EN 166 → EN ISO 16321-1; EN 345-1 → EN ISO 20345), renames the maintenance reference document, and makes a handful of small wording refinements aimed at precision: e.g. specifying “Ordnance Survey grid reference,” naming the HSE source document, and flagging front roll-over risk on descents..
