Forestry England - Lessons Learned

Two sub-contractors were crossing a river in a utility terrain vehicle (UTV), to gain access to a peat restoration site where they were working. The crossing had been agreed, as part of the work, and was in use for several weeks prior to the event without issue. The sub-contractors attempted to cross the river, as it appeared the same as the day before, but they quickly lost control. The current spun the vehicle sideways, carrying it down-stream and allowing water to fill inside the vehicle.

Where an emergency arises, follow the emergency plan. If the plan relies on contacting the emergency services, then do so. Do not delay making contact where there is threat to life, as emergency services will need time to respond and to attend the scene.
