Working in fields where cattle may be present

A third of all fatal accident in agricultural involve cattle. When working in fields where cattle may be present take the following precautions:

  • Ensure that the job is properly planned and resourced.
  • Contact the farm owner and check whether cattle will be in the field during the time of work.
  • If cattle will be in the field during the work period, ask the farmer if they can be temporarily moved while work takes place. This is particularly important if cows are with calves.
  • If cattle cannot be moved from the field, consider whether the work can be done at a different time when cattle are not in the field.
  • If cattle are in the field while work is taking place, you should:
    • Assess the risk to your staff.
    • Consider having a vehicle or vehicles parked close to the work area in case of the need to use as a refuge. The vehicles themselves can also be parked and used as a barrier.
    • Have at least 2 people present where possible.
    • For longer duration or more complex work, consider whether it is reasonable to temporarily segregate the work area. You may need to discuss this with the farmer.
    • Discuss how the cattle will be monitored by the farmer while work takes place. The farmer should remove the cattle if they are distressed or showing signs of aggression

The Health and Safety Executive produces guidance for farmers and landowners that may assist when working with or near to cattle:
