Unexploded Ordnance on Site

A military shell, referred to as unexploded ordnance (UXO), was found within a mature commercial woodland by the Forestry Works Manager (FWM) while scoping out the route of a proposed forest road line.

The FWM marked the area on the ground, recorded its GPS location and took photos. It was reported to the Police in the first instance. The police attended the site and contacted the Royal Navy bomb disposal squad, who then attended and removed the UXO safely.

Subsequent research showed that the area was part of a practice range used by the war office during World War two, in preparation for the liberation of mainland Europe. It was suspected that other UXOs may be within the worksite.

Read more below including what to do if suspected UXO is found on site.
