Windblow damage

Following Storm Eowyn on Friday 24 January, Scottish Forestry has indicated they will be following the guidance and procedures laid out in the Windblow Contingency Plan as a framework for action. A spokesperson said: “It is too early to tell what the overall storm damage to forests and woodlands will be in light of Storm Eowyn... There are however some factors, including wind direction and the variable average wind speeds across Scotland during the storm, that may partially mitigate the scale of impact." Find out more here.

In December 2024 Storm Darragh caused significant damage through windthrow and windsnap to forests and woodlands in Wales. If you are a landowner or manager and you intend to fell trees in Wales, you will normally need a felling licence from Natural Resource Wales, unless covered by a relevant exception. This Regulatory Decision does not change your legal requirement to have a valid Felling Licence where necessary, however, NRW will not normally enforce the need for a felling licence if you meet the necessary conditions.
