First Aid Kits - Chainsaw Operators

FISA Safety Bulletin

This FISA bulletin gives a list of what a chainsaw operator needs for your personal first aid kit.

This document is intended to provide advice to Chainsaw Operators and FWM’s on what reasonable expectations are regarding the provision and supply of first aid kits for chainsaw operators.  It can also be a helpful list offering suggestion of first aid kit provision for other isolated or rural workers operating in forestry.

Re-issue of Chainsaw Operators personal first aid kit - April 2022:

Following concern raised by members and further research on the inclusion of the use of the tourniquet for crush injuries the current guidance from Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh

“The use of tourniquets has a theoretical role in the management of these patients. If the release into the circulation of the contents of crushed muscle cells can be avoided, possibly with the use of a tourniquet, it may be of benefit. However, there is currently no available evidence to support this.”
