Tree Shears/Grapple Saws

FISA-AA Safety Alert

V7 update - 23 April 2021 - The machine should also have visible or audible overload warning (loads over 1 tonne), check valves, be marked with SWL and be subject to LOLER thorough examination (if operator not protected by FOPS/OPS/ROPS or if there is a risk that loads may be lifted over or close to people).

Thanks go to the FISA Plant & Equipment Tree Shears/Grapple Saws Sub-Group, chaired by Sean Reilly for pulling this safety alert together so quickly in support of the industry.  This is a collaborative group with the support of HSE, Arb Association and a range of contractors/suppliers/manufacturer input for those specialising in this equipment.  This same Working Group will shortly release the brand new FISA 608 Safety Guide on this subject.

The safety alert is released in response to the need for outline safety guidance for new and rapidly growing use of tree shears /grapple saws. If you have any comments/feedback on this subject please send these into technical@ukfisa.com; your information will be fed to the FISA Plant & Equipment Sub Group who are now working on the new FISA 608 Safety Guide.  The more detailed FISA 608 Safety Guide will when published and supersede this released Safety Alert.  The Alert being issued is an interim provision focussing on the safety topics of chain shot; risk zones and PUWER/LOLER Regulations.
